Stripping hardwood kitchen cabinets?
I have dark oak kitchen cabinets that are from the late 1970's and I want to lighten them somehow by stripping and refinishing them. I am not sure if I would strip the narrow panels of "wood" that is between the cabinet fronts the same way as the cabinet doors? How do I go about this? Do I need any special respiratory protection mask? What products can I use since I live in southern Alberta, Canada (We do have a Home Depot in our city)? A few of the cabinet doors are warped, is there a way of fixing it?

Nice to hear from a fellow Canadian. I am over in Ontario.
We are finally warming up here and it sounds like we are both doing some stripping.
Your cabinet fronts will have to be done the same as the doors for a perfect job.
The stripping part is easy, and here are the directions for that....
The first thing you must do is assemble the material to do the job.
The stripper is the most important item.
The stripper I use is my Home Hardware house brand, but Home Depot may carry the Circa brand paint and varnish remover.
MATERIAL LIST For the stripping stage.
1 gallon stripper
6 boxes of Bull Dog steel wool in medium grade.
One 3 inch oil based paint brush.
Rubber gloves (like you do dishes with)
An empty large coffee can. (for the stripper)
A couple of old tooth brushes.
Lots of old rags (I like t-shirts or cotton but for this first stage whatever you have)
No respirator required if you have lots of ventilation in your work area.
That's all you need to get started…not much is it?
HERES WHAT YOU DO...
Work in sections.
Brush on the stripper with the brush. Stripper will quit working if it dries, so keep it wet till the finish softens.
Then take a rag and wipe this mess off.
Then another coat of stripper, rag off again, then while the wood is still wet, take the steel wool and rub with the grain till the wood is nice and clean.
Use the toothbrush in crevices.
Thats all there is to it ...move to another section and continue.
No other prep is necessary...and DO NOT SAND.
When the stripping is complete, stain with Minwax stain applied with a rag, ( I know you want lighter cupboards but use a stain even if its the Minwax color called "natural" because it evens out the look) then two coats of the finish of your choice.
Lets hope this will remove enough of the dark stain so you can have lighter cupboards.
There is only one way to remove warps from wood, and it may or may not work in the case of your doors, but give it a try.
You need the warped door stripped first, then you need a very hot sunny day and a patch of green grass....sounds odd eh?
Next you water the patch of grass generously with water, and place the stripped door on it. Imagine placing a cup on the grass upside down. Well you place the door in the same manner with the hump up and the warped edges down.
If the door is placed wrong your warp will increase in the wrong direction. So determine which is the correct position and lay the door down for the best part of a day making sure its always in full sun.
I hope this works for you, and if not you will have to adjust your doors to compensate for the warp.
